What is Counselling?
Counselling is about you having some time to think about your own
issues, thoughts and feelings with the support of someone who is
genuinely interested in and concerned about you.
Your counsellor will listen to you, and help you to think your
way through whatever is concerning you, so that you can find your
own answers and come to understand better what you are feeling.
Your counsellor will:
- Listen to you
- Be genuinely interested in what you are thinking and feeling
- Help you to make sense of what is happening to you.
Your counsellor will not:
- Tell you what to do
- Give you advice
- Solve your problems for you
Remember, this is your
time.
How many sessions will I have?
You will initially be offered six sessions with your
counsellor. If at the end of that time, you both agree that some
further sessions would be helpful, then you will be able to continue
to see your counsellor.
Each session will last for 50 minutes and your
counsellor and you will agree a regular day and time that suits you.
You will usually see your counsellor once a week.
Is there a cost involved?
For most people, the cost of the counselling
sessions will be covered by the agreement that we have with the
person or organisation that referred you.
However, if you have referred yourself, there may be
a cost involved. In these cases, we will have discussed this with
you when you came along for your initial assessment.
Will what I discuss with my
counsellor be confidential?
Your counsellor will not share the things that you
tell him or her with anyone else. What you talk about will just be
between the two of you. Your counsellor cannot tell your family,
your doctor or anyone else about the things you discuss.
The exception to this would be if you tell your
counsellor something that makes them concerned that you may do
something to harm either yourself or someone else. If this happens,
your counsellor will need to pass this information on. They will let
you know that they are going to do this.
