A monthly drop-in service is helping local adults with profound learning disabilities to live more independently in the community.

The specialist intensive support team, part of the Community Learning Disability Service provided by Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, has been running monthly sessions at Teamwork Trust’s Kettering centre since June 2018.

Aimed at adults in the north of the county whose severe mental ill health or challenging behaviour is restricting them from achieving a fulfilling life, individuals, family members or carers can use the drop-in service to receive rapid access to specialist assessment and treatment.

Through a multi-disciplinary team of nurses, psychologist, occupational therapists, duty clinician and speech and language therapists, the key elements include:

  • Consultation work with other professionals
  • Intensive assessment of the behaviour and the environment in which it occurs
  • Development of creative and supportive environments that enable the individual to build new skills and coping mechanisms to prevent breakdown.

The sessions take place on the first Wednesday of the month. For more information call 01536 452149.
