Another prestigious win for Northamptonshire charity, Teamwork Trust, who scooped the ‘Disability Impact Award’ in the Charity Today Awards 2019 – and it was service-users who collected the trophy.

With only four UK charities in the category shortlisted out of 675, Teamwork Trust – alongside disabled artist, Jason Wilsher-Mills – was crowned the winner for its involvement in the ground-breaking digital arts project, ‘Corby Totems’.

During the ceremony at The Key Theatre in Peterborough, the audience watched a video about how the year-long art exhibition was based on two sculptures, digital art, music, lights, voiceovers and animated movies, and how it gave over 250 disabled adults and 1,000 school children in Northamptonshire a voice.

Victoria Bell, Head of Development, Teamwork Trust said: “Our work with Jason on this project was all about inclusion and opportunities for adults with learning and physical disabilities and mental health needs, so it was important to us that our members were involved in the celebrations.

"We were given the red-carpet experience, which was a real treat in itself, but to have then gone on and won against such strong competition highlights Teamwork Trust’s reputation and excellence within the charity sector."

"We work so hard to make sure our members have the same chances as everybody else, and working with Jason on such a wonderful project gave them a voice. It has been an emotional evening and one they’ll remember forever.”

Teamwork Trust Service-user, Claire said: “I can’t believe we won. I feel so special and proud of us all.”

With support from Made in Corby, Arts Council England and The Mighty Creatives, Corby Totems was the biggest funded project in the UK for an individual artist.

Jason, who could not attend the ceremony due to illness, said: “I was there in spirit and felt very honoured to have won with my friends from Teamwork Trust. Corby Totems changed lives, I know this because it changed mine.”

Corby Totems is currently being exhibited at The People’s History Museum in Manchester before the sculptures return to Corby in October.
