Job description – Counselling Lead

At Teamwork Trust we run a community counselling service, annual timetable of wellbeing classes, weekly peer support sessions, and a wellbeing hub to help low income, financially and socially disadvantaged people.

We deliver more than 4,000 hours of counselling to the general public and local communities per year through referrals from GPs, community mental health and wellbeing teams, and crisis intervention and voluntary organisations such as Mind and Northamptonshire Carers.

Our counselling service is a busy, well-established support service for people across the North Northants area. We also provide counselling training placements to trainees studying counselling diplomas.

We are recruiting two part time Counselling Leads to coordinate and expand our counselling service.  We would consider recruiting this as one full time post. This position requires an experienced practitioner (BACP registered/member).

It is essential to have experience of Integrative Counselling, supervision of counsellors and working in an organisational setting, along with a willingness to embrace and develop a broad range of counselling models.

The successful candidate will hold a small caseload of complex cases but will spend most of their time assessing new clients and supporting our counsellors, both staff and volunteers. Experience and practice in mentoring trainees and counsellor supervision is also integral to the role.

The successful candidate will work closely with an administrator who will work to help co-ordinate the day-to-day function of the service. The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate high levels of professionalism.

The role is subject to receiving satisfactory references, Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check, and a probationary period.

Service Management & Development:

To be responsible for the running of a professional and successful service.

To coordinate, manage and lead a safe, professional and accessible face to face and digital counselling service.

To develop and expand existing service provision, to include contracted services and develop a commercial offer.

To manage the staff counsellors and support the volunteer counsellors and schedule services in line with service availability.

To work with the Head of MH and Wellbeing and the Wellbeing Lead to develop and review appropriate policies and procedures, including referral, cancellation, assessment, financial and administrative procedures.

To work with the Head of MH and Wellbeing and the Wellbeing Lead to develop blended services to ensure Teamwork increases its reach and diversity.

To develop and implement a business plan for the service. To support bid writing where appropriate.

To lead the recruitment and induction of all counsellors.  To provide line management to all counsellors.

To liaise with providers to gain trainee counsellors.

To lead the initial screening and subsequent mentoring of trainee counsellors on placements. To identify potential training needs in volunteer counsellors.

To ensure adequate professional supervision and attendance by counsellors, manage process with the administrator.

To promote and publicise the counselling service among relevant agencies, referrers, service users and potential service users.

To liaise and network with relevant statutory and voluntary sector partners.

To liaise with regulatory bodies

Service Delivery:

  • To oversee and undertake client assessments: allocating clients to counsellors; direct service users to suitable services; to make clients aware of the other mental health and wellbeing programmes being offered within Teamwork and through our partners.
  • To manage a small case load of complex clients.
  • To ensure safeguarding procedures are adhered to.
  • To manage external clinical supervision for self and volunteer counsellors.
  • To ensure the service is delivered in line with BACP guidelines & ethical framework.
  • To ensure well led and administered service.
  • To report to and liaise with line management regarding the delivery of the service.
  • To ensure that client complaints are investigated and dealt with appropriately.
  • To ensure that a sustainable service is provided to support the charity.


Service Monitoring & Evaluation:

  • To set up and maintain appropriate record keeping systems in line with data protection requirements.
  • To ensure service outcomes and outputs are effectively monitored and evaluated and prepare service statistics monthly working with the Counselling Service Co-ordinator.
  • To ensure budgets are adhered to and financial systems maintained.
  • To gain donations and cancellation charges.
  • Ensure any funded projects are provided in line with the funding application and monitored



  • Recognised qualification in counselling or psychotherapy Level 4 Level 5 diploma or above
  • Evidence of significant post-qualifying continuous professional development
  • Certificate in counselling supervision
  • Membership of professional body, preferably BACP, UKCP or BPC
  • Eligible for or working towards professional accreditation BACP accreditation/UKCP reg or equivalent

  • Experience of audit and/or research

  • Significant knowledge of IT systems used in the monitoring of high quality counselling services, possible experience of using CORE
  • Ability to work well within a team
  • Experience of working under pressure and handling competing demands
